BlueScope Steel Induction Video wins Award
It’s not every day that BlueScope Steel staff get to be on a film shoot. But that’s what happened when a series of induction videos were produced to train staff safely on OHS isolation procedures at the Western Port Plant in June last year.
In the weeks leading up to filming, members of the plant isolations committee helped create the script and then for seven days, a video production crew filmed staff undertaking their procedures.
The result was around 60 minutes worth of video training covering an isolation regulations overview for general induction, level 2 and positional training for specific isolation duties.
All new staff including contractors at the Western Port Plant are required to watch the videos related to their position, while current staff are now using the videos for annual refresher. An assessment test is also given.
Mike Hamilton the Technical Services Manager at Western Port Works managed the video production and reviewed its performance.
"Properly training our staff is an imperative at BlueScope Steel. We now havesome engaging and well written training videos that are giving us great results. It has removed the need to hold classroom sessions with a facilitator and also the need to do the training on overtime to line up with the classroom times", Mike said.
"Since the training videos have been introduced at the Plant, there has been a noted improvement in staff being trained consistently, shorter training time required, and a reduction in gaps in knowledge. It has removed all of the mystery behind the procedures. The cost savings are around $30,000 a year and the training videos are expected to be used for five years. This is the best isolation training video we’ve ever had", added Mike.
Training Australia Magazine has awarded Digicast Productions the company who made the training videos, the LearnX Asia Pacific 2008 for "Best use of Video in a Training Program" for the induction videos.
This is a great result for all of those who participated in the training videos.

Testimonials
Digicast undertook all of the video production services required for the Queen’s Baton Relay as part of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. They were professional in their approach to the QBR. We found them knowledgeable in relation to the technology required to service television coverage Australia wide. The video technology chosen was truly state of the art, and enabled QBR maximum television coverage and quick turn-around for play-out packages to the networks.
The camera guys truly captured the essence of the relay, showing the emotion and beauty of the epic journey. The Digicast crew were always friendly and a pleasure to have in our crew.
